How it is taught
One subject, one language
Each subject is taught in one language, so children do real work in both.
Spanish across the building
The Spanish teachers speak Spanish in the room, in the hallway and on the yard, and the classroom labels are in both languages.
English in its own block
Reading and writing in English begin in grade 2, with a daily block and a teacher who teaches only in English.
Children who start without Spanish
Children who start without Spanish learn through gestures, songs and stories. Teachers speak Spanish to them from the first day.
Children who speak Spanish at home
Children who speak Spanish at home read and write it in class, and learn English in their daily block.
Families
Notes, meetings and conferences are in Spanish and English, and the teachers call when there is something to tell.
The arts
Art and music are taught in English, and each grade's songs are sung in Spanish.
